WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University baseball team posted its largest margin of victory under head coach Derek Carlson tonight as the Judges defeated visiting Newbury College, 19-4, under the lights of Stein Diamond. The Judges improve to 10-13, while the Nighthawks fall to 5-14.
The Judges scored multiple runs in each of the first five innings: three in the first and the second, six in the third, two in the fourth and five in the fifth. Newbury broke through with single runs in the sixth and seventh and two more in the ninth. Eleven different Judges had hits, with six collecting multi-hit games.
The Judges tied two single-game records in the contest. Junior second baseman Victor Oppenheimer (West Hills, Calif.) tied the single-game mark with seven at-bats, finishing 3-for-7 with two doubles, two RBI and three runs scored. Sophomore shortstop Mike Khoury (East Bridgewater, Mass.) came to bat five times and went 3-for-3 with two walks, scoring five runs to tie a single-game record. He also had three RBI and a double.
Sophomore infielder Isaac Fossas (Dudley, Mass.) went 2-for-3 with three runs scored, four RBI, a double and his third home run of the season, a two-run shot in the fifth. Classmate center fielder Dan Frey (Ipswich, Mass.) had a game-high five RBI, going 2-for-3 with a triple and a two-run homer, his third of the campaign.
Newbury was paced by sophomore designated hitter Ronald Zabala (Peabody, Mass.), who was 3-for-4 with a double and accounted for three of the team's runs with an RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore second baseman Brian Cipolla (Cranston, R.I.) was 2-for-5 with an RBI, while senior David Center's (Medford, Mass.) double was the Nighthawks' only other extra-base hit.
Brandeis starter Greg Tobin (Medfield, Mass.) threw six innings of four-hit ball, allowing one run. He struck out a season-high eight and walked just one to improve to 3-2 on the season. Nighthawks freshman Joe Persechino (Torrington, Conn.) took the loss with 2.1 innings of work.
The Nighthawks make a return to conference play on Saturday as the host the Eastern Nazarene Lions at 12:00 p.m. The doubleheader will be played at The Roxbury-Latin School.
