NORTHBORO, Mass. - The Newbury Nighthawks got their 2019 New England Collegiate Conference schedule underway on Saturday with a doubleheader against Southern Vermont College. In the opening game, the Nighthawks came away with a 4-1 win, but the Mountaineers would force a split of the doubleheader with a 10-4 win in game two.
Game One: Newbury 4 - Southern Vt. 1
After a pitcher's duel through five innings, the sixth inning would provide the offense for both teams with Newbury outscoring the Mountaineers 4-1 in the inning on their way to the win by the same score.
Mountaineers senior Ryan Serrato (Whittier, Calif.) batted 1-for-2 with a double. Serrato was one of five Mountaineers with a hit.
After five scoreless innings, the teams entered the sixth at 0-0. SVC would open the scoring on a Nighthawks error to take a 1-0.
The Nighthawks responded in the bottom of the inning with two on in scoring position with no outs. Sophomore Dylan Presby (China, Maine) tied the game on an RBI single. Senior David Center (Medford, Mass.) would help Newbury take the lead on a groundout to take a 2-1 lead.
Two batters later with two outs and two in scoring position, Paulino's two-RBI double gave insurance runs to the Nighthawks for a 4-1 lead.
SVC had their opportunities to strike but could not take advantage. The Mountaineers loaded the bases in the fifth by a popout to the pitcher ended the SVC threat.
Nighthawks senior Mark Travers (Norwood, Mass.) pitched a complete game, allowing one run on five hits with four strikeouts. Travers notches his first win of the season, moving to 1-2.
Game Two: Southern Vt. 10 - Newbury 4
The Mountaineers scored early and often in the second game, forcing the split of the doubleheader with a 10-4 win.
Mountaineers junior Kyle Liddy (Oriskany, N.Y.) finished 2-for-4 with a pair of home runs and five RBIs. Senior Ryan Serrato finished 3-for-5.
Nighthawks sophomore Brian Cipolla (Cranston, R.I.) batted 1-for-3 with a two-run home run. Junior Christopher Tran (Nantucket, Mass.) and sophomore Wilfredo Ortiz Jr. (Boston, Mass.) both had a double.
Liddy got the Mountaineers on the board in the top of the first with a three-run home run for a 3-0 lead.
Leading 5-0 in the fourth, Liddy struck again with his second home run of the game, a two-run shot to left field, to take a 7-0 lead.
Now 7-1 in the fifth, Cipolla went deep to left field for his first career home run and cut the Nighthawks deficit to 7-3.
Southern Vermont continued to add runs, including a Serrato single for an 8-3 lead.
The Mountaineers entered the seventh ahead 10-3 and Newbury could only add one run on a bases-loaded walk.
SVC's senior Ryan Richards (Beaumont, Calif.) went five innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits, taking the win to move to 2-0.
The split of the doubleheader moves Newbury to 2-10 (1-1 NECC) and SVC to 6-8-1 (1-1 NECC).
The Nighthawks are back on tomorrow with a doubleheader at Mitchell College. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
