Nighthawks Suffer Non-Conference Setback vs. Emerson

NORTHBORO, Mass. - The Emerson Lions offense posted 10 runs while the pitching staff held the Newbury Nighthawks to five hits, as the Lions took home a non-conference, 10-2, win over the Nighthawks on Thursday afternoon from the New England Baseball Complex.

Lions freshman Josh Cohen (Corte Madera, Calif.) batted 3-for-5, all singles while adding two RBIs and two runs scored. Freshman Joe Colucci (Howell, N.J.) went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored. Junior Cam Beattie (Gilbert, Ariz.) finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Nighthawks sophomores Brian Cipolla (Cranston, R.I.) and Wilfredo Ortiz Jr. (Boston, Mass.) both batted 2-for-3. Freshman Alex LaGreca (Natick, Mass.) finished 1-for-2.

The Lions were on the board early, taking a 1-0 lead on a Nighthawks error. A ground-rule, RBI double by junior Joe Cuccio (Jefferson, N.J.) would make it 2-0 after the top of the first.

The scoring continued in the second with Emerson taking a 3-0 lead on an RBI single by senior CJ Rogers (Guilford, Conn.). The Lions went up 5-0 on a two-RBI double by Beattie later in the inning. Emerson would add one more run in the second on an RBI single to lead 6-0.

The Lions would enter the ninth lead 10-0 but the Nighthawks broke up the shutout on an Emerson error, costing the Lions a pair of runs, as Emerson led 10-2.

Lions junior Jack Fox (Los Angeles, Calif.) pitched five scoreless innings, grabbing the win to move to 3-2. Nighthawks sophomore Leo Frisella (Tewksbury, Mass.) was credited with the loss, pitching 1.2 innings.

Emerson jumps to 4-14 with the win while Newbury drops down to 1-9.

Conference play opens up for the Nighthawks as they host Southern Vermont College on Saturday afternoon at the New England Baseball Complex. First pitch is set for noon.
