Nighthawks Earn 15-3 Win at Mass Maritime for First Win of Season

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. - The Newbury Nighthawks offense posted a season-high 15 runs and 16 hits, earning their first win of the season via a 15-3 victory over the Massachusetts Maritime Buccaneers on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference play at Hendy Field.

All nine Nighthawk starters recorded at least one hit, led by junior Dante Serino (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.), who batted 4-for-6, all singles with three runs scored. Senior David Center (Medford, Mass.) went 3-for-4, including a triple and three RBIs. Sophomore Brian Cipolla (Cranston, R.I.) finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

Buccaneers junior Nick Haley (Hanson, Mass.) batted 3-for-4 with a pair of solo home runs. Senior Paul Sances (Middleboro, Mass.) finished 2-for-5.

Tied 2-2 after four, the Nighthawks overwhelmed the Buccaneers with runs in the final five innings of the game.

In the fifth, the Nighthawks took a 3-2 lead with an RBI double by junior Brett Cabral (Plymouth, Mass.). Newbury increased the advantage in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Cipolla, giving the Nighthawks a 4-2 lead.

Newbury added a pair of runs in the seventh with an RBI single by junior Nick Dorazio (Oxford, Conn.) to take a 5-2 lead. A wild pitch later in the inning scored Cabral for a 6-2 lead.

The Nighthawks posted three runs in the top of the eighth, starting with a two-RBI triple by Center, giving Newbury an 8-2 lead. Center scored on a sacrifice fly later in the inning by sophomore Chris Paulino (Wilton, Conn.).

The Nighthawks poured on the offense in the ninth, scoring six runs in the final frame. The Buccaneers managed one run in the ninth as Newbury grabbed their first win of the season with a 15-3 win.

Nighthawks freshman Joe Persechino (Torrington, Conn.) went five innings, allowing two runs on four hits, earning his first career win, improving to 1-0. Senior Mark Travers (Norwood, Mass.) earned the save, pitching the final four innings.

Buccaneers senior Brian Kwedor (Marshfield, Mass.) takes the loss despite his five innings, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out seven. Kwedor falls to 0-3 with the loss. 

The Nighthawks move to 1-5 this season while the loss drops Massachusetts Maritime to 2-8.

The Nighthawks return to play on Saturday, hosting Husson University for two games at the New England Baseball Complex, starting at 4:00 p.m.
