NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. - In the ninth inning, Falcons junior Mitchell Lundholm (Plymouth, Mass.) provided the game-tying RBIs, followed by senior Ismael Perez (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and his game-leading RBI single, all of which was apart of a nine-run final inning as the Fisher Falcons came back to defeat the Newbury Nighthawks 12-5 on Thursday evening at the New England Baseball Complex.
Lundholm finished the day 2-for-6 while Perez finished 2-for-5. Senior Ivan Rivera (Brooklyn, N.Y.), who came in as a pinch hitter, finished 3-for-3. Sophomore Reynaldo Mejia (Lawrence, Mass.) batted 4-for-5 on the day and added two RBIs. All but one player for Fisher finished with a base hit as the team collected a season-high 20 total hits.
Nighthawks senior David Center (Medford, Mass.) and sophomore Dylan Presby (China, Maine) both batted 2-for-3 with an extra-base hit. Presby had a double down the left-field line while Center got his first triple of the season with a shot down the right-field line. Junior Christopher Tran (Nantucket, Mass.) finished 3-for-4, all singles.
The Nighthawks led 5-3 going to the ninth but back-to-back singles put the tying runs on base for Fisher. After a batter's interference, a walk loaded the bases, setting up the game-tying single by Lundholm. The single found a hole in the right side of the infield, scoring Rivera and junior Sami Bibovic (Brooklyn, N.Y.) to tie the game at 5-5.
A pop out by the next batter set the stage for the Nighthawks to potentially escape the inning with a tie game. However, Perez singled to center field, driving in the game-leading run, giving the Falcons their first lead of the game, 6-5.
From there, a triple, double, and two singles would score six more runs for Fisher, capping the nine-run ninth inning that provided a 12-5 lead.
The Nighthawks held the lead for much of the game thanks to the play of the outfield trio of Tran, Presby, and sophomore Brett Cabral (Plymouth, Mass.). Newbury held a two-run lead in the sixth when Presby threw Perez out at the plate for the third out. Tran would make a pair of plays in the next inning, throwing out a pair of Falcons at the plate.
Falcons senior Wesley Lopez (Caugas, PR) picked up the victory, improving to 1-0. Nighthawks sophomore Brian Cipolla (Cranston, R.I.) takes the loss and falls to 0-1.
Fisher moves to 14-4 this season while two losses to open the season leaves Newbury at 0-2.
The Nighthawks return to play with a doubleheader on Saturday vs. Lasell at the New England Baseball Complex, starting at 12:00 p.m. The Falcons head for Campbellsville University in Kentucky for a four-game series starting on March 8.
