NORTHBORO, Mass. - Amcats juniors Adam Twitchell (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Fili Veras (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) both enjoyed three-hit days as the Anna Maria Amcats start the season with a 13-3 win over the Newbury Nighthawks on Saturday afternoon at the New England Baseball Complex on Opening Day for both teams.
Twitchell finished 3-for-6, all singles, with three RBIs and two runs scored. Veras finished 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles. Freshman Jackson Dobek (Natick, Mass.) batted 2-for-4 with three runs scored.
Nighthawks junior Brett Cabral (Plymouth, Mass.) and sophomores Dylan Presby (China, Maine) and Brian Cipolla (Cranston, R.I.) all batted 2-for-4. Cabral and Cipolla also added a double and one RBI, each.
After a scoreless first, the Amcats got on the board first in the second inning. With the bases loaded and two out, Twitchell singled, driving in a pair and giving Anna Maria a 2-0 lead.
In the next inning, Anna Maria was at it again with freshman Kosta Drosidis (Holden, Mass.) starting the scoring with an RBI single. Drosidis would score on a sac fly, all part of a three-run third, giving the Amcats a 5-0 lead.
The Nighthawks got on the board in the bottom of the third with back-to-back-to-back singles to score junior Nick Dorazio (Oxford, Conn.), cutting into the deficit at 5-1.
Anna Maria added seven runs between the top of the fourth and fifth innings to take break open the game and lead 12-2.
The sides exchanged runs in the ninth as Anna Maria finishes with the 13-3 victory.
The Amcats open the season at 1-0 while the Nighthawks drop to 0-1.
Newbury returns to play on Thursday as they face Fisher College at the New England Baseball Complex at 3:30 p.m.
