NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. - Mountaineers senior John Arancio (Oradell, N.J.) batted 4-for-5, hitting for the cycle and adding three RBIs, as the Southern Vermont Mountaineers defeated the Newbury Nighthawks 17-8 on Friday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference play.
Mountaineers junior Dan Mason (Bloomingdale, N.J.) batted 2-for-4, including a double and three RBIs. Junior Zack Stacey (Saratoga, N.Y.) went 1-for-4 with a bases-clearing triple in the fifth.
Arancio's cycle started in the first, hitting a triple to right-center field, giving the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead. Arancio scored on a Mason sacrifice fly to lead 2-0.
In the third, Arancio launched a solo home run to right field, the third home run of his season, giving the Mountaineers a 3-0 lead.
In the fifth, Arancio legged out an infield single, leaving him a double away from the cycle. In the fifth, the Mountaineers broke the game open, leading 13-4 after five innings.
Arancio completed the cycle in the seventh, hitting a double down the left-field line, just out of the reach of the diving Nighthawks third baseman.
Mountaineers junior Joe Braim (Saratoga, N.Y.) improves to 4-2 with the win. Nighthawks senior Jacob Pringle (Acushnet, Mass.) falls to 3-6 with the loss.
The Nighthawks season comes to an end at 12-23 while the Mountaineers start a three-game series with the Lesley Lynx this weekend.
