NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. - Mariners junior Steven Pagan (Oceanside, Calif.) batted 3-for-4 with two RBIs and junior Peter Abate (Wallington, Conn.) finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs helping the Mitchell Mariners complete a three-game sweep over the Newbury Nighthawks with a 9-3 win on Saturday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference play.
Mariners junior Eric Marriott (Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada) went 3-for-5 on the day, including a double. Junior Marcus Melendez (Storrs, Conn.) was also 3-for-5 with an RBI.
Tied 1-1 in the top of the fourth, a Mariners two-out rally produced a pair of runs. Melendez singled through the left side to give Mitchell a 2-1 lead. Melendez later scored on a single by Abate to give the Mariners a 3-1 lead.
The Mariners added a pair in the fifth, again with the help of a two-out rally. An RBI single to left by Melendez gave Mitchell a 4-1 lead. Melendez later scored with another Mitchell RBI single.
The Nighthawks cut into the deficit in the sixth. A two-out single by Dorazio cut the deficit to 5-2. Later in the inning, a failed pickoff attempt scored Martinez for a 5-3 game.
The Mariners locked down the game in the eighth with the help of an RBI single by Abate, a sacrifice fly, and a Pagan RBI single to lead 9-3.
Mitchell senior Bryton Ferris (Manchester, Conn.) takes the win in 5.2 innings, improving to 4-0. Nighthawks senior Jake Pringle (Achusnet, Mass.) falls to 1-5 in his seven inning effort.
The Mariners improve to 15-2 (5-1 NECC) while the Nighthawks drop to 7-14 (2-6 NECC).
Next for the Nighthawks is a Thursday night game at Lasell College at 7:00 p.m. The Mariners resume play with a Monday game against NECC opponent Lesley University at 3:30 p.m.
