Nighthawks Drop Doubleheader to Mitchell on Drizzly Friday

GAME ONE: Mitchell 16 - Newbury 1

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Mariners offense was in high gear, scoring nine runs in the first inning while Mitchell College pitching combined for a one-run, one-hit performance, as the Mitchell Mariners defeated the Newbury Nighthawks 16-1 in the first of two games on Friday from Alumni Field in New England Collegiate Conference play.

Mariners senior Garet Griffin (Moosup, Conn.) batted 3-for-6 including a double and four RBIs. Senior Kyle Hartenstein (Meriden, Conn.) finished 2-for-5 with a three-run home run. Junior Peter Abate (Wallington, Conn.) finished 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Nighthawks freshman Dylan DiFillipo (Peabody, Mass.) was the only Nighthawk to earn a hit for Newbury finishing 1-for-1 with a run scored.

The Mariners nine-run rally in the first all came with two outs, starting with an RBI single by senior James Rangel (North Bergen, N.J.) to give Mitchell a 1-0 lead.

After back-to-back singles made it 3-0, junior Marcus Melendez (Storrs, Conn.) doubled to right-center for a 5-0 lead.

After an Abate single made it 6-0 and a walk, Hartenstein went deep to right-center, a three-run shot to cap off the nine-run first.

The Mariners added four more runs in the second, including a two-run single by Griffin and a two-run single by junior Steven Pagan (Oceanside, Calif.) to lead 13-0.

The Nighthawks were held hitless until DiFillipo's double in the sixth inning. He later scored on a fielder's choice.

Mariners senior Eddie Santiago (New London, Conn.) pitched four innings, allowing no hits and walking one while improving to 1-1 with the win.

Nighthawks senior Jim McGrorry (Oakhurst, N.J.) made it two innings, falling to 4-1 this season.

 

GAME TWO: Mitchell 9 - Newbury 0

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Mariners offense was hot again, scoring six runs in the third inning on the way to a 9-0 victory over the Newbury Nighthawks on Friday night.

Mitchell jumped on top early in the nightcap, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Eric Marriott (Niagara Falls, Canada/A.N. Myer) led off with a single and later scored on a base hit by James Rangel (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen). The Mariners then loaded the bases with one out before a Newbury error allowed the second run to score.

An RBI single by Hartenstein made it 3-0 in the second, and Mitchell broke the game open with a six-run third inning. Jack Finnegan (Old Saybrook, Conn./Xavier)Markus Melendez (Storrs, Conn./E.O. Smith) and Griffin all plated runs with singles, and Hartenstein added a ground-rule double to drive in another.

Javi Martinez (Saugus, Mass./Pioneer) had a single and a double to lead the Nighthawks. Starting pitcher Leo Frisello (Tewksbury, Mass./Shawnsee Valley) gave up three runs on five hits over 2.0 innings in the loss.

Mitchell and Newbury finish the three-game series tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. from New England Baseball Complex
