GAME ONE: Becker 6 - Newbury 3

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. - Hawks senior Chris Testa (Providence, R.I.) batted 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs, helping the Becker Hawks to a 6-3 win over the Newbury Nighthawks in game one of the afternoon at New England Baseball Complex in New England Collegiate Conference play.

Becker jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the top of the first. After Josiah Shepherd (Providence, R.I.) led off the game with a single and freshman Coby Hussey (Claremont, N.H.) walked, Testa put the Hawks on the board with an RBI single. Michael Bianco (Manorville, N.Y.) capped off the inning with a two-run double down the right-field line.

Hussey would put the Hawks up 4-0 with an RBI groundout to the right side in the second.

A couple fielding miscues by Becker in the bottom of the second allowed the Nighthawks to cut the deficit to 4-1.

The scored remained the same until the Hawks added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning. With two runners in scoring position, Hussey drove in his second run of the game with another RBI groundout. Testa followed with an RBI single to put the Hawks in front 6-1.

The Nighthawks were able to scrape across two runs in the bottom of the seventh to make things interesting, but senior Michael Iacovelli (Northbridge, Mass.) got the final two outs of the inning to preserve the 6-3 victory.

Junior southpaw Daniel Diaz (Teaneck, N.J.) earned the win after tossing the 6.1 innings without allowing an earned run while striking out six Nighthawks. Nighthawks senior Jacob Pringle (Acushnet, Mass.) took the loss to fall to 1-1.

GAME TWO: Becker 7 - Newbury 1

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. - The Hawks offense exploded for a six-run final inning, including the eventual game-winning single by Cameron Plank (Marlborough, Mass.) as the Becker Hawks swept the two-game afternoon from the Nighthawks with a 7-1 win in the second game of the afternoon.

The Hawks and Nighthawks traded runs in the fourth and reached the seventh inning tied at 1-1.

The Hawks started the inning with a pinch-hit double to center by freshman William Negron (Bronx, N.Y.). Plank then stepped to the plate and singled in the hole on the left side, scoring Negron for a 2-1 Hawks lead.

From there, the Hawks offense blew up. Plank scored on a double by Noah Rivera (New Bedford, Mass.) to give the Nighthawks a 3-1 lead.

Later in the inning, a double by Kevin Perez (Jersey City, N.J.) capped off the six-run rally by the Hawks.

Junior Tanyon Ventres (Holden, Mass.) picked up the win to move to 1-0 while Nighthawks freshman Ryan Mullaly (Heights, N.Y.) took the loss to fall to 1-1.

The Nighthawks and Hawks meet again tomorrow morning to finish off the three-game series.
