BOSTON, Mass. - The Newbury College Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Teams began the 2016 campaign with convincing victories in this afternoon’s tri-meet with Daniel Webster College and, host, Wheelock College at Daisy Field. Seniors Tim Brown (Orange, Conn.) and Naomi Ricciotti (Phoenix, Ariz.) took home individual medalist honors.
Brown completed the 2.8-mile course with a time of 16:07. The Nighthawks occupied the entire top-5 with Joshua Oliver (Poughkeepsie, N.Y) crossing the line at 16:26, Chris Beaudoin (Bristol, Conn.) at 16:27, Nicholas Luciano (Vineland, N.J.) at 17:15 and Devin Johnson (Manchester, Conn.) at 19:02.
Ricciotti paced Newbury by covering the 2.08-mile course in 17 minutes and three seconds. She was followed by her teammates Destiny Spears (Arnold, Md.) at 18:01, Tina Babcock (Ayer, Mass.) at 18:53, finishing second and third, respectively. Completing the top-5 scorers for the Nighthawks were Brittany Beals (Lawrence, Mass.) who finished sixth overall at 20:34 and Kristen Connors (Wilmington, Mass.) finished seventh at 21:59.
The men’s team scores for the meet were Newbury with 15 points, Daniel Webster with 44 and Wheelock with 75. On the women’s side, Newbury paced the field with 19 points and Wheelock recorded 36 points.
The victories marked the first for first-year head coach Henry Morales and assistant coach CJ Haase.
Newbury returns to the course on Saturday, September 17 when the Nighthawks travel to New London, Conn. for the Mitchell College Invitational. The women’s race will begin at 10am followed by the men at 11am.
