Seahawks Fly Over Nighthawks

NEWPORT, R.I. – The Newbury College women’s volleyball team fell to Salve Regina, 3-0, Monday night at the Rodgers Recreation Center. Junior Julianne Barry (Randolph, Mass.) tallied a match-high 11 kills to lead the Seahawks to victory.

Freshman Clare Adams (New Concord, Ohio) added seven kills and eight digs for the Seahawks (11-15), who remained undefeated at home in 2010 and surpassed their win total from last season. Sophomore Stephanie Williams (Medford, Mass.) notched six kills to lead Newbury, which slipped to 8-15.

The Seahawks posted a .300 hitting percentage en route to a 25-11 win in game one. Barry led the Seahawks with five kills while freshman Jill Diffendaffer (Centennial, Colo.) chalked up four. The Nighthawks struggled to find their offense and finished with a -.250 hitting percentage.

Salve Regina began game two with junior Jessica Meyer (Seymour, Conn.) at libero, sophomore and starting libero Megan Clancy (Chelmsford, Mass.) up front, and Adams on the bench. The Seahawks fell behind early but took the lead for good at 10-9 via a service ace from freshman Christine Navarez (Ridgewood, N.J.). Salve Regina went on to score a 25-19 win behind three kills from Barry and two each from Navarez and freshman Alessandra Pulit (Cheshire, Conn.). Williams, meanwhile, played her best set of the night, posting five kills for a two-game hitting percentage of .444 to pace Newbury.

The Seahawks closed out the match with a 25-15 win in game three. Adams returned for Salve Regina and tallied five of her kills while Diffendaffer racked up four of her own in the final frame.

Meyer finished the night with a team-high 12 digs while freshman Kelsey Stafstrom (Westford, Mass.) dished out a match-high 18 assists. Senior Lisa Zabel (Madison, Conn.) finished with 10 assists and seven digs while Diffendafer recorded a match-high four blocks (two solo). For Newbury, senior Amy Chen (Chelmsford, Mass.) picked up 13 digs while sophomore Regina Sibilia (Agawam, Mass.) handed out 14 assists.

Newbury will return to action on Thursday October 28th when they host Suffolk University in a non-conference match on Senior Day at 7:00 pm.
