Vikings Defeat Nighthawks, 3-1
The Newbury College Women’s Volleyball team was defeated by Salem State University, 3-1(17-25,27-25,28-26,25-17) tonight in Brookline, MA. Leading the way for the Vikings was junior outside hitter Rachael Murphy (Wallingford, CT) who collected 9 kills, 7 digs and 3 serving aces on the night.
In game one, Newbury looked to dominate the match defeating the Vikings 25-17 behind the strong play of first year middle blocker Jessy Touron (Brockton, MA). Touron finished the first game with 3 kills, 4 digs and 1 serving ace, while fellow middle blocker Steph Williams (Medford, MA) picked up 2 blocks and 1 kill to help seal the victory for the Nighthawks.
The second and third games of the night would be decided in extra points as both teams battled it out to the very end. Eventually Salem State would edge out the Nighthawks in both games and would go on to earn the teams’ third win of the season behind the solid play of Jazmin Santos (Lawrence, MA), Brittany Roscoe (Lowell, MA) and Shannon Malone (North Quincy, MA) who finished the match with 9, 6 and 6 kills respectively.
Despite the loss, the Nighthawks saw big games out of Williams as she finished with a season high 8 kills, 3 serving aces, 2 digs and 3 blocks. Also adding to the offense for Newbury was Tricia Corriveau (Coventry, RI) who had 13 kills and 7 serving aces, while Touron added 9 kills and 13 digs on the night.
Newbury will take to the court again on Saturday when they travel to Mt. Ida College for a tri-match, games are set to start at 12:00pm.
