Nighthawks Split Tri-Match with Wildcats, Nor’easters
The Newbury College women’s volleyball split Saturday afternoon’s tri-match defeating the Wildcats of Bay Path College 3-0 before falling to the University of New England, 1-3. Leading the way once again for the Nighthawks was first year stand out and current NECC “Rookie of the Week” Jessy Touron (Brockton, MA) with 14 kills and 19 digs on the day.

In game 1 of the tri-match, the Nighthawks jumped out to an early 1-0 lead and never looked back as they defeated the Wildcats 25-11, 25-17, 25-15. Touron and teammate Tricia Corriveau (Coventry, RI) led all hitters with 9 kills each, while Corriveau added a red hot .727 hitting percentage to go with 8 digs and 3 serving aces. Also guiding Newbury to victory was Middle Blocker Steph Williams (Medford, MA) with 7 kills and setter Regina Sibilia (Agawam, MA) with 25 assists.
Despite the loss, Bay Path’s Nadine Harkless (Westfield, MA) matched a game high 9 kills and also picked up 9 digs in the loss.
UNE 3, Bay Path 0
In game two, the Nor’easters of the University of New England dominated the Wildcats from the start. UNE finished the game in three sets 25-10, 25-4, 25-15. UNE had an all around team effort as 5 players finished with 4 or more kills for a team total of 39 in the game, with a hitting percent of .408. Leading the way for UNE was Lindsey Cahell (Merrimack, MA) as she hit an amazing .600 with 9 kills and no errors.
UNE 3, Newbury 1
Game three of the day would provide the most excitement as Newbury battled UNE to four sets but in the end the Nor’easters would complete the tri-match sweep 25-14, 25-18, 22-25, 25-16. Pushing UNE to victory this time around was Paige Curran (Chelmsford, MA) who collected a tri-match high 13 kills in the game, for a total of 20 on the day.
Newbury’s Kerri McAuley (Middleboro, MA) and Williams stepped up for the Nighthawks in the battle as they combine for 9 blocks and 8 kills despite the loss.
The split bring Newbury’s record to 8-14 overall and 2-3 in the NECC, while the Wildcats fall to 7-12 overall and 2-4 in the conference. The sweep brings UNE’s record to 17-9 overall and 4-3 in the TCCC. Newbury will take to the court again Monday October 25th when they will travel to Rhode Island to face non-conference opponent Salve Regina, game time is set for 7:00pm.
