Nighthawks Sweep Tri-Match
The Newbury College Women’s Volleyball team defeated both Anna Maria College and Albertus Magnus College, going 2-0 in today’s tri-match played at Hellenic College in Brookline, MA. The wins mark the first collegiate victories for first year Head Coach Chris Taylor as the Nighthawks defeated both opponents by a 3-1 score.
In the first match of the day, the Nighthawks jumped off to a fast start defeating the AMCATS 25-19,25-15,20-25, 25-20 led by Senior Middle Blocker Kerri McAuley (Middleboro, MA) who had 11 kills in the match while also adding 3 digs to her stat line. Also making noise for the Nighthawks was fellow Middle Blocker Stephanie Williams (Medford, MA) who added 11 kills and 3 digs of her own. Despite the loss, the AMCATS’ Outside Hitter Sandy Acosta (Lawrence, MA) recorded 11 kills, 5 digs and 2 blocks in the match.
The second match of the day brought the most excitement as Anna Maria and Albertus Magnus would need 5 sets to decide a winner. In the end, Anna Maria battled back after dropping 2 straight sets to defeat the Falcons 3-2. Leading the way for Anna Maria was yet again Acosta with 13 kills, 4 digs and 2 blocks, while Nichole Robbie (Bellingham, MA) also poured in 13 kills, 5 serving aces and a team high 25 digs in the victory. The Falcons were led by Junior Elizabeth Williams (West Haven, CT) who would also pick up 13 kills and a match high 30 digs in the loss.
In the third and final match of the day, the Nighthawks defeated Albertus Magnus 25-13, 18-25, 25-16, 25-22 to complete the tri-match sweep. Pacing Newbury to victory was first year Outside Hitter Jessy Touron (Brockton, MA) who broke out with 11 kills, 5 serving aces and 10 digs in the match.
Newbury will take to the court again on Wednesday when they travel to Pine Manor College, game time is set for 7:00pm.
