Blue Jays Win Thriller over Nighthawks
The Newbury College women's volleyball team lost to St. Joseph's College (CT) Wednesday evening, in Brookline, MA by a score of 3-2. Junior middle hitter Brittany Souza (Newington/Newington, CT) led the way for the Blue Jays with a match high 20 kills.
Newbury jumped out to an early lead and looked to be in control of the match, winning the first game 20-13, but St. Joseph's turned on the pressure in game two, battling for each point. The Nighthawks would eventually dig out the game 27-25 but the Blue Jays were gaining momentum with every play.
Heading into game three, the tides had turned and the Blue Jays were rolling, defeating the Nighthawks 25-20. The energy carried over into game four and St. Joseph's rallied to even the match at 2-2 by a score of 25-17.
The final and deciding game five looked to have Newbury in the win column as they managed to put together 4 straight points and put the opponents backs against the wall, but St. Joseph's battled back once again, behind Souza and senior outside hitter Catherine Irwin (Northwest Regional/Barkhamstead, CT) to take the fifth game 15-11 and complete the comeback for the match.
Despite the loss, the Nighthawks were led by sophomore outside hitter Tricia Corriveau (Coventry, Coventry, RI) with 11 Kills and first year defensive specialist Jesse Urrey (Cobleskill-Richmondville/Cobleskill, NY) who had a match high 17 digs.
With the loss the Nighthawks drop to 9-18 on the season while the Blue Jays improve to 11-11. Newbury will return to action Saturday October 24th when they travel to Bay Path College for an NECC matchup, game time is set for 1:00 pm.
