Nighthawks Soar past Gators

The Newbury College Women's Volleyball team defeated Pine Manor College tonight in Brookline, MA by a score of 3-0.  The Nighthawks dominated the Gators from the start and swept all three games by scores of 25-17, 25-8 and 25-8.   

Newbury came out on fire in the first game, with Senior Sarah Nelson (Pioneer Valley/Bernardston, MA) serving 12 straight points, but the Gators would battle back pulling to within two points cutting the score to 18-16.  After a timeout, the Nighthawks would refocus and went on to only let Pine Manor score one more point in the game, defeating them 25-17.

In the second and third games of the day, Newbury went on to silence Pine Manor's offense with solid defense and an offensive attack of their own lead by NECC "Rookie of the Week" Sara Hanna (East Port-South Manor/Cobleskill, NY) and NECC "Player of the Week" Tricia Corriveau (Coventry/Coventry, RI) (left).  Hanna and Corriveau would combine for 21 kills in the match leading the Nighthawks to 25-8 victories in both games. 

Despite the loss, the Gators' Jennifer Gross (Coral Glades/Coral Springs, FL) registered three kills and 8 digs in the match.

The Nighthawks have now won 3 matches in a row and in their first three games have already matched their win total from just a year ago.  The Nighthawks will now take to the road as they travel to Western New England College for a round robin tournament this weekend.
