Nighthawks Split Tri-Match with Visiting Lesley & Regis
First Match: Newbury 3, Lesley 1
The Newbury College women's volleyball team defeated Lesley University in the first game of Saturday afternoon's tri-match at Hellenic College. Freshman Sara Hanna (Center Moriches, NY/East Port-South Manor) led the Nighthawks with a game high 13 kills in the victory.
After losing the first game, the Nighthawks came back to win the second game after being down by four late in the contest. Newbury would not back down and tied the Lynx four times before ultimately winning 29-27. It was a turning point for the Nighthawks as they went on take games three and four, 25-22 and 25-17, respectively.
Freshman Amanda McCracken (Eldersburg, MD/Liberty) led the Lynx with a 11 kills while fellow freshman Kaitlyn Miller (Leesport, PA/Schuylkill Valley) followed up with 30 assists.
Second Match: Lesley 3, Regis 0
The Lesley University women's volleyball team swept Regis College in the second match of the day, 3-0. Senior Lindsey Marek (Bedford, MA/Bedford) led the Lynx with seven kills in the victory.
Lesley took the first game 25-16 but the Pride made a valiant come-back in the second time. Game two was a tight battle between the two institutions but the Lynx ultimate took the game in 25-23 then the deciding game three, 25-14.
Freshman Amanda McCracken (Eldersburg, MD/Liberty) contributed with two solo blocks and two assisted blocks. With the win the Lynx finish the day at 1-1 as they improve to 5-11 on the season.
The Pride were led by sophomore Lauren Ross (Dracut, MA/Dracut) who recorded seven kills in the loss.
Third Match: Regis 3, Newbury 1
The Regis College Pride rallied after a tough loss to Lesley University to defeat the host Nighthawks by a score of 3-1. Sophomore Lauren Ross (Dracut, MA/Dracut) continued to guide her squad unleashing nine kills on the match.
Newbury won the first game with a ten-point margin (25-15), but could not seal victory as they battled point-for-point in the final three games, coming up just shy in each of them (25-21, 25-19, 25-19). Sara Hannah (Center Moriches, NY/East Port-South Manor) showcased another stellar performance for the Nighthawks as she came away with 14 kills and 23 digs in the loss. Fellow freshman Sarah Young (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) gave a solid defensive effort on the day recording 14 digs of her own.
Also playing well for Regis in the victory was junior Megan McCarty (Billerica, MA/Billerica) and sophomore Domingas Gomes (Brockton, MA/Brockton) who recorded eight kills a piece.
Newbury travels to Suffolk University on Tuesday, October 13th looking for a non-conference victory over the Rams.
