Huskies Sweep Tri-Match

The University of Southern Maine Women's Volleyball team defeated both Newbury College and Southern Vermont College, going 2-0 in today's tri-match played at Hellenic College in Brookline, MA.  The Huskies made quick work of Southern Vermont 25-17,25-9,25-19 but would have to battle it out with the Nighthawks to pull off the victory 20-25,25-18, 29-27, 25-22.  

In the first match of the day, the Nighthawks jumped off to a fast start defeating Southern Vermont 25-6,25-15,26-16 led by First Year Outside Hitter Sara Hanna (Center Moriches, NY) who had 6 kills in the match while also adding 4 service aces to her stat line.    

The second match looked much like the first as the Huskies defeated the Mountaineers in three straight.  Southern Maine was paced by Shannon Shuttle (New Ipswich, NH) who recorded 13 kills and 6 digs in the winning effort. Despite the loss, Kayleigh Moretto (Bow, NH) picked up 9 kills and 3 digs for Southern Vermont. 

The third and final match of the day was filled with excitement as the Huskies and Nighthawks battled it out in each of the 4 games.  Newbury would strike first with the help of Hanna and Tricia Corriveau (Coventry, RI) as they pounded the floor exchanging kill for kill, allowing Newbury to take the first game 25-20.  The Huskies on the other hand would not back down, as they responded back with 25-18 and 29-27 victories behind Shuttle once again and Danielle Netland (Cumberland, ME) who each had 13 and 15 kills respectively in the match.  Newbury would keep the press on but Southern Maine stood to the challenge winning the 4^th game 25-22 to take the match and stay undefeated on the day. 

Southern Manine's Shuttle led all players with a tri-match high 26 kills, while teammate Netland led the way with 36 digs on the day. 

Newbury will take to the court again on Wednesday when they take on St. Josephs College (CT), game time is set for 7:00pm.
