The 2009 NECC All-Conference Women’s Volleyball Team Announced
ATTLEBORO, Mass. - Seven of the eight sponsored programs were represented on 2009 New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Women's Volleyball All-Conference Team, it was announced today by Commissioner Del Malloy. In addition to the All-NECC honors, four separate major individual award winners and the team sportsmanship award were also voted upon and selected this week.

Daniel Webster Captures NECC Title Over Newbury, 3-2
Nashua – In one of the most remarkable and heart-stopping finishes in Daniel Webster College and New England Collegiate Conference history across all sports spectrums, the top-seeded Eagles women's volleyball team rallied from two sets down and from a 14-9 deficit in the fifth and deciding set to stun second-seeded Newbury, 3-2 and capture their first ever conference championship before an electrified Mario Vagge Gymnasium crowd of nearly 300 Saturday afternoon.

Nighthawks Fall to Saints
The Newbury College women’s volleyball team was defeated by visiting Emmanuel College tonight in three quick games (25-13, 25-14, 25-15) in Brookline, MA. The Saints were led by junior Megan Murray (Killingworth, CT/Haddam-Killingworth) who recorded ten kills as well as ten digs on the night. Before the match, the Nighthawks honored lone senior Sarah Nelson (Bernardston, MA/Pioneer Valley) for her hard work and dedication to the volleyball program. Nelson has played in 256 career games and registered 967 career assists. Currently, she leads Newbury in service aces with 53.

Blue Jays Win Thriller over Nighthawks
The Newbury College women’s volleyball team lost to St. Joseph’s College (CT) Wednesday evening, in Brookline, MA by a score of 3-2. Despite the loss, the Nighthawks were led by sophomore outside hitter Tricia Corriveau (Coventry, Coventry, RI) with 11 Kills and first year defensive specialist Jesse Urrey (Cobleskill-Richmondville/Cobleskill, NY) who had a match high 17 digs.

Huskies Sweep Tri-Match
The University of Southern Maine Women’s Volleyball team defeated both Newbury College and Southern Vermont College, going 2-0 in today’s tri-match played at Hellenic College in Brookline, MA. The Huskies made quick work of Southern Vermont 25-17,25-9,25-19 but would have to battle it out with the Nighthawks to pull off the victory 20-25,25-18, 29-27, 25-22.

The Newbury College women’s volleyball team defeated Lesley University in the first game of Saturday afternoon’s tri-match at Hellenic College. Freshman Sara Hanna (Center Moriches, NY/East Port-South Manor) led the Nighthawks with a game high 13 kills in the victory.

Salve Regina Volleyball Sweeps Newbury, 3-0
NEWPORT, R.I. – Senior Deanna Salter (Westwood, Mass.) recorded a match-high 12 kills to lead the Salve Regina University volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Newbury College in non-conference action Tuesday night at the Rodgers Recreation Center. Sophomore Tricia Corriveau and freshman Stephanie Williams (Medford, Mass.) each tallied four kills for the Nighthawks, who dropped to 6-4.

Lancers Defeat Nighthawks
The Newbury College women’s volleyball team lost to Worcester State College Tuesday evening, in Brookline, MA by a score of 3-1. Worcester State jumped out to the early lead dominating the first game 25-14 but Newbury responded quickly in game 2 and finished the game by a score of 25-22 behind the strong play of first year outside hitter Sara Hanna (Center Moriches, NY) who recorded 5 kills and 4 digs in the game.

Maine Maritime sweeps Eastern Nazarene and Newbury College
Eastern Nazarene College played host to a tri-match at the Lahue Physical Education Center this Saturday and overcame a two game deficit to defeat the Newbury College Nighthawks three games to two. The win snaps an eleven game losing streak on the part of the Lions, improving their record to 2-13 and the Nighthawks to 5-11

Lasers Overpower Nighthawks
The Newbury College women’s volleyball team lost to Lasell College Thursday evening, 3-1. Freshman Elizabeth Nichols (Southington, CT/Southington) led the Lasers to the victory with a team-high 12 kills. Freshman Sara Hanna (Center Moriches, NY/East Port – South Manor) led the Nighthawks with a game-high 13 kills in the loss. Teammate Sarah Nelson (Bernardston, MA/Pioneer Valley) was also solid with 17 assists.

Nighthawks Defeat Buccaneers
BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- Freshman Stephanie Williams (Medford, Mass.) recorded nine kills to lead Newbury to a 3-0 non-league college volleyball victory over Massachusetts Maritime by game scores of 25-8, 25-12 and 25-14 in a match played Tuesday evening at the Clean Harbors Athletic Center. Fellow freshman Sara Hanna (Center Moriches, N.Y.) added seven kills for the visiting Nighthawks (5-7), who also received 15 set assists from senior Sarah Nelson (Bernardston, Mass.) in the triumph.

Mustangs Sweep Nighthawks
The Mount Ida women’s volleyball team defeated Newbury College tonight in Brookline, MA by a score of 3-0. The Mustangs dominated the Nighthawks from the start and swept all three games by scores of 25-14, 25-18 and 25-21. Despite the loss, the Nighthawks’ first year libero Jesse Urrey (Cobleskill, NY/Cobleskill-Richmondville) had an impressive performance accumulating 26 digs in the match, while fellow first-year Sarah Young (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) recorded three kills and eight digs of her own.

Corriveau and Hanna Earn NECC Weekly Honors
PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Newbury College sophomore outside hitter Tricia Corriveau (Coventry, R.I.) earned the Nighthawks their 2-0 opening week sweep. Corriveau swung her way to a weekly .414 hitting percentage. She tallied ten kills, four digs and two assists for the week. ROOKIE OF THE WEEK - Fellow Newbury College freshman outside hitter Sara Hanna (Center Moriches, N.Y.) led her team for the week with 12 kills, seven digs and eight service aces en route to a 2-0 opening week. In a 3-1 win against Albertus Magnus, she notched a .466 attack percentage, while coming back for a 3-0 sweep of Anna Maria swinging her way to an amazing .555 attack percentage. For the week, she totaled a .515 hitting percentage, 1.7 kills per set, 1.1 aces per set and 1.0 digs per set.

The Newbury College Women’s Volleyball team defeated Pine Manor College tonight in Brookline, MA by a score of 3-0. The Nighthawks dominated the Gators from the start and swept all three games by scores of 25-17, 25-8 and 25-8.

Chen Receives Kevin G. Honan Sportsmanship Award
Amy Chen (Chelmsford, MA) has been chosen as the 2009 State Representative Kevin G. Honan Sportsmanship Award recipient. The award which is sponsored by Johnson & Papakyrikos CPA and Financial Planners honors the player who through her actions demonstrates one or more of the ideals of sportsmanship; including fairness, civility, honesty, unselfishness, respect and responsibility.
