Nigthawks Fall To Lancers In Season Opener
The Newbury College women’s tennis team fell to Worcester State University, 6-3, in their 2010 season opener. Senior Ashley Perkins (Worcester, MA/Doherty) led the way to victory winning both her singles and doubles completion for the Lancers.
Perkins and classmate, senior Courteney Blais (Paxton, MA/Worcester Academy) opened up the day with an 8-0 doubles victory over Newbury senior Stephanie Valentine (Pleasant Valley, CT/Saint Paul Catholic) and junior Kristin Conners (Riverside, RI/East Providence). In singles completion, Conners battled Perkins tough, taking her to seven games in the first set before falling 7-5. Perkins came away with the match victory with a 6-4 win in set two.
Sophomore Alex Derderian (North Providence, RI/North Providence) was solid for the Nighthawks despite the loss. In addition to defeating sophomore Jacqueline Shaw (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge) she teamed with fellow sophomore Jennifer Swafford (Merrimack, NH/Merrimack) to win second doubles. Valentine also played well in her singles match as she defeated Worcester State sophomore Mariah Tangney (West Boylston, MA/West Boylston).
With the loss Newbury falls to 0-1 to begin the season while Worcester State improves to 1-0. The Nighthawks will return to the court on Thursday September 9th when they face the Gators from Pine Manor College at 3:30pm.
