Nighthawks Drop Regular Season Finale To Beacons
The Newbury College women’s tennis team fell to UMass-Boston, 8-1, in their last regular season contest. Before the match, the Nighthawks honored senior Stephanie Valentine (Pleasant Valley, Conn./Saint Paul Catholic) for her outstanding contributions to the women’s tennis program and Newbury athletics, over her four year career.
Valentine picked up Newbury’s lone win defeating UMass-Boston senior Brittany Engel (Freehold, N.J./Freehold) in third singles. After winning the first set decisively, 6-1, Engel rebounded in the second set, edging out Valentine, 7-6, to force a set three. But Valentine came away victorious as she held on to defeat Engel in the tie-breaker, 10-6.
UMass-Boston sophomore Anitra Kloczewiak (Newton, Mass./Newton North) paved the way to victory for the Beacons, claiming victories in both singles and doubles. She paired up with freshman Destanee Ringler (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) to win first doubles, 8-1 then defeated Newbury sophomore Jennifer Swafford (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack) in first singles, 6-0, 6-3. Engel and teammate, sophomore Wendy Steinman (Dudley, Mass./Shepherd Hill Regional) also played solid in the victory, sweeping third doubles, 8-0.
