Nighthawks Defeat Mitchell

The Newbury College women's tennis team defeated Mitchell College, 7-2, Saturday afternoon. Junior Kristen Conners (Riverside, RI/East Providence) and senior Stephanie Valentine (Pleasant Valley, CT/Saint Paul Catholic) led the Nighthawks to their sixth overall victory against the Mariners.   

In the singles competition, Connersand Valentine won both second and third singles. After battling for the 7-5 win in each of their first sets, Conners swept the second set, 6-0, to defeat Walsh in second singles while Valentine defeated Mariners junior Amanda Resnick (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood), 7-5, 6-3, in third singles. 

Sophomores Alexandra Derderian (North Providence, RI/North Providence) and Julie MacLeod (Buffalo, NY/Frontier Senior) rounded out the day for the Nighthawks with victories in their singles competitions as well.   

Flanagan had the lone win for the Mariners, defeating sophomore Jennifer Swafford (Merrimack, NH/Merrimack), 6-1, 6-0, in first singles.

With the win, Newbury improves to 3-5 on the season and 1-3 in the conference while Mitchell falls to 0-7 and 0-4 in the NECC. The Nighthawks return to the court on Monday September 27^th when they host Curry College in a non-conference match at 3:30pm.
