Lynx Edge Past Nighthawks, 5-4

Newbury College junior Kristen Conners (Riverside, RI/East Providence) forced a third set against Lynx senior Michelle Side (Miller Place, NY/Rocky Point) in a tight conference contest with Lesley University. Staving off a comeback, Side took set three 6-4 as the Lynx picked up their first conference win and second overall with the 5-4 victory.

In second singles, Conners took Side to a third set following a 6-2 win in set two. Side quickly jumped out to a five game lead early in set three but Conners battled back. She won the next four games before Side eventually won the match in 10^th and final game.

Senior Stephanie Valentine (Pleasant Valley, CT/Saint Pau l Catholic) and sophomore Alexandra Derderian (North Providence, RI/North Providence) were solid for Newbury, defeating their singles opponents to give the Nighthawks a match lead. But Lesley freshman Katie Side (Miller Place, NY/Rocky Point) held off a valiant comeback by Newbury sophomore Julie MacLeod (Buffalo, NY/Frontier Senior) in the second set to take the match, 6-3, 7-6 to even the overall match at four.

Lesley improves to 1-0 in the conference and 2-0 overall with the victory while Newbury falls to 1-4 on the season and 0-2 in the NECC. The Nighthawks will return to the courts on Monday September 20^th when they travel to Quincy to face Eastern Nazarene College at 3:30pm.
