Becker Defeats Newbury in NECC Action
The Becker College women's tennis team defeated Newbury College, 8-1, Saturday afternoon in Chestnut Hill, MA. Seniors Danielle Stryker (Ledyard, CT) and Lianna Woodbury (Southe Dennis, MA) and juniors Megan Nessen (Levittown, PA) and Shauna McNally (Worcester, MA) each picked up two wins on the day for the Hawks.
In Singles action, Nessen defeated Newbury's Jennifer Swafford (Merrimack, NH) 6-1,6-2, while teammate Stryker defeated Stephaine Valentine (Pleasant Valley, CT) 6-1, 6-0. Also in singles play, Becker's Jessica Burdick (Clinton, MA) collected a tough win from Julie MacLeod (Buffalo, NY) 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.
In doubles Woodbury and teammate Courtney Johnson (Auburn, ME) defeated Newbury's Stephanie Ruffin (Waltham, MA) and MacLeod in the closet doubles match of the day, 8-5.
Kristin Conners (Riverside, RI) had the lone win for the Nighthawks, defeating junior Laura Mimms (Ashland, MA), 0-6, 6-4, 6-1 in number two singles.
With the win, Becker improves to 11-4 on the season and 7-1 in the conference while Newbury falls to 4-9 and 2-6 in the NECC. The Nighthawks return to the court on Tuesday October 12th when they travel to UMass Dartmouth in a non-conference match at 3:30pm.
