BOSTON, MA - The University of Massachusetts Boston women's tennis team gained its first victory of the season with an 8-1 decision over visiting Newbury College today in a match that was played on the Boston College High School courts. The Beacons improve to 1-1 on the season, while the Nighthawks fall to 1-1.
Freshman Anitra Kloczewiak (Newton, MA), senior Emily Johnson (Saugus, MA), junior Carolina Gonzalez (Bridgewater, MA) and freshman Abigail Balme (North Attleboro, MA) were all double winners for UMass Boston on the day with a singles and doubles victory each. Gonzalez and Balme both improve their respective season records to 3-1 on the season. Johnson moved into sole possession of second on the Beacons' career doubles victories list with 20, while moving into a tie for career singles wins with 17. Senior Jillian Hurd (Taunton, MA) and freshman Wendy Steinman (Dudley, MA) combined for an 8-6 win at number three doubles for UMB, while junior Brittany Engel (Freehold, NJ) came back to win at sixth singles for the Beacons, 5-7, 6-1, 11-9. Freshman Jennifer Swafford (Merrimack, NH) scored the lone point for Newbury with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at fifth singles.
