Nighthawks Win 5th Match of the Season
NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Mitchell College women's tennis team dropped an 8-1 decision to Newbury College on Saturday afternoon at New London High School.
The Nighthawks (5-3 overall, 2-1 NECC) started the day by winning two of three doubles matches and then went on to sweep all six singles contests. The match at No. 1 singles was the only one that Newbury didn't win in straight sets. Jillian Wojtowicz (Palmer, Mass.) and freshman Erica Fazio (Waterford, Conn.) split the first two sets before playing a tiebreaker in lieu of a third set. Wojtowicz, who cruised to a 6-1 win in the first set, rebounded from a 6-3 loss in the second set to earn a 10-5 victory in the tiebreaker.
The lone victory for the Mariners (0-6 overall, 0-2 NECC) came at No. 2 doubles, where senior Miah Manning (Putnam, Conn.) teamed with freshman Carly Crozer (Kailua, Hawaii) for an 8-5 win over Newbury's Alexandra Derderian (North Providence, R.I.) and Stephanie Valentine (Pleasant Valley, Conn.).
Mitchell will next host Becker College on Monday, September 28 at 3:30 p.m. Newbury will host Bay Path College on Sunday, September 27 at 1 p.m.
