Saints Defeat Nighthawks in Women’s Tennis Action

The Newbury College women's tennis team lost a non-conference match today to visiting Emmanuel College by a score of 8-1.  Nighthawk freshman Jennifer Swafford (Merrimack, NH/Merrimack) continued to shine collecting the sole Newbury victory in the third singles spot.

Doubles action began with competitive matches across the board as players in both first and second doubles battled for their respective leads.  Newbury's Kristen Connors (Riverside, RI/East Providence) and Jillian Wojtowicz (Palmer, MA/Palmer) came out strong with some fierce rallies but could not capitalize in the latter portion of the match.  Despite Swafford and Stephanie Valentine's (Pleasant Valley, CT/Saint Paul Catholic) efforts in the #2 position, they too were overtaken by Emmanuel as Taylor Kelly (Poughkeepsie, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes) and Brianna Murphy (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional) came away with the victory.   

Singles play was dominated by the Saints as Emmanuel earned points in five out of six positions. Swafford made quick work of her opponent winning with set scores of 6-1 and 6-3.  Wojtowicz fought hard for the Nighthawks in second singles, but lost 2-6, 6-2, 10-8.  

Newbury will travel to Becker College on Thursday, October 8^th  for a match beginning at 3:00 PM.
