Nighthawks Soar past Lions
The Newbury College women's tennis team defeated the visiting Lions of Eastern Nazarene College by a score of 8-1, this afternoon in Chestnut Hill, MA. This is the Nighthawks second straight win and has improved their record to 4-2 on the season.
The Nighthawks swept doubles play by scores of 9-8 (7-5), 8-4, 8-5, with the highlight match in the number one doubles slot where Jillian Wojtowicz (Palmer, MA) and Kristen Conners (Riverside, RI) rallied to defeat Allison Cammarata (Marion, MA) and Elise Sleeper (Sanford, ME) 9-8 (7-5) in a tiebreaker match.
In singles play, the Nighthawks won 5 out of 6 behind the unbelievable play of both Alexandra Derderian (North Providence, RI) and Conners, who both won their matches in final set tiebreakers. Also adding highlights for Newbury was NECC "Rookie of the Week" Jennifer Swafford (Merrimack, NH) who defeated Heather LaFountain (Pawtucket, RI) 6-1, 6-0, and Stephanie Valentine (Pleasant Valley, CT) who defeated Stephani Pestilli (Norwell, MA) by a score of 6-4, 6-2. Rounding out the scoring for Newbury was Julie Macleod (Buffalo, NY) as she defeated Monica Gonzalez (Somerville, MA) 6-1, 6-0.
The Nighthawks will host Becker College for their second New England Collegiate Conference match of the season on Thursday, September 24th, the match is set to start at 3:30pm.
