Newbury Earns NECC Tennis Honors
The 2009 New England Collegiate Conference Women's Tennis Championship Tournament concluded yesterday at the Enfield Tennis Club in Enfield, Connecticut hosted by Bay Path. The championships were an individual flighted tournament that was based upon student-athletes' singles and doubles conference records. Players were seeded as individual players while seeds were not based on a team's finish.
The #3 flight doubles Championship saw Newbury's freshman tandem Alexandra Derderian (North Providence, R.I.) and Julie MacLeod (Buffalo, NY) winning 8-3 over Bay Path's sophomore Lianna Loveitt (Gorham, Maine) and junior Carolina Ynguanzo (Springfield, Mass.).
Newbury's Jennifer Swafford (Merrimack, NH) grabbed the #5 singles flight title, beating Lesley's freshman Brenna Donovan (Hingham, Mass.) 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 in another tie-breaker match.
Newbury also received honors as Sophomore Kristen Connors (Riverside, RI) was named to the All-NECC Singles Honorable Mention team.
The Newbury College Nighthawks led by first year head coach Jeremy Glenn also received the 2009 NECC Women's Tennis Team Sportsmanship Award. The Nighthawks finished third in the conference standings with a 4-4 overall record and are 7-8 overall for the 2009 campaign.
