Tomaselli Leads Nighthawks over Gators
The Newbury College women’s soccer team collected their first win of the season defeating the Gators of Pine Manor College by a score of 2-1 in Chestnut Hill, MA this afternoon. First year Forward Briana Tomaselli (Warwick, RI) led the way for the Nighthawks scoring both of her team’s goals in the first half.
Newbury got on the board just three minutes into the game when junior middle fielder Jessica Graus (Rochester, NY) found Tomaselli in the front of the net for a shot that blasted by the Gators goalkeeper Colleen Tencza (Brockton, MA). Later in the half, at the 38 min mark, Tomaselli found the back of the net yet again, on a cross this time from first year forward Krista Toney (Broken Arrow, OK), giving Newbury a 2-0 advantage heading into the half.
Pine Manor came out of the break fired up and as a result outshot the Nighthawks 5-0 in the first 10 minutes of the second half, putting the pressure on first year goalkeeper Kimberly Bibby (Brockton, MA). Bibby would answer with solid saves, collecting 7 for the game. Still applying pressure, the Gators Amanda Powell (Lumberton, NJ) would eventually knock in a goal from within the box gently grazing off the side post and just working its way over the goal line.
Despite the loss, the Gators goalkeepers would collect 11 saves on the day, Tencza with 6 and backup keeper Natasha Kopystynsky (Johnstown, IL) with 5.
With the win, the Nighthawks record stands at 1-1-0 while the Gators are now 0-3-0 on the season. The Newbury women will return to action on Thursday September 16th when they will travel to MA Maritime, kick off is set for 7:00pm.
