Nighthawks Preserve the 4-4 Stalemate
The Newbury College women’s soccer team battled Mitchell College to a 4-4 tie in the second game of Sunday afternoon’s men’s-women’s doubleheader. It was a game of two halves. A combined six goals were scored between the Nighthawks and Mariners in the first period while second half was all defense aside from two Mitchell goals.
After Mitchell junior Leslie Briggs (Dighton, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth) opened the contest with a quick score 34 seconds in, the Nighthawks responded with three unanswered goals to take the 3-1 lead. Freshman Briana Tomaselli (Warwick, R.I./Pilgrim) tied up the match at one with a break-away goal from fellow freshman Maria Salamone (Portland, Maine/Deering) in the 7th minute. Two minutes later, Tomaselli gave Newbury the lead on a break-away up the middle from junior forward Rachel Wyszynski (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug Regional). Senior Ashley Greene-Allen (Brockton, Mass./Brockton) score the Nighthawks third consecutive goal on a long give-and-goal chip shot to the right corner of the net in minute 16.
Briggs closed the deficit to one, scoring her second goal of the game on a right side break-away from junior Nikki Hoxie (Winsted, Conn./Gilbert School) in the 29th minute. But junior Jessica Graus (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Arcadia) pushed the lead back to two as she put the ball in the back of the net of a penalty kick with 10 minutes left in the half.
Momentum shifted over to Mitchell in the second. The Mariners scored twice and out-shot the Nighthawks 13-1 in the second. In the 74th minute, Hoxie beat the Newbury defense to cut the deficit to one. It remained a one point game until under two minutes left when sophomore Lauren Fritsch (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell) forced overtime with a long shot from the left side on a pass from Hoxie.
Newbury is now 2-1-1 in the conference and 4-6-2 overall while Mitchell is 3-0-1 in the NECC and 5-6-1 overall. The Nighthawks will return to the pitch on Tuesday October 19th when they travel to Nashua, N.H. to face NECC opponent Daniel Webster College at 4:00 PM. Their next home contest will be Saturday October 23rd against the Mountaineers of Southern Vermont College at 12:00 PM.
