Nighthawks Fall to Lions, 6-1
BOSTON, Mass. -- Emerson College allowed the first goal to
Newbury College but less than two minutes later had a 2-1 lead en
route to a 6-1 non-conference women's soccer victory at Emerson's
Rotch Field.
Freshman Brianna Tomaselli (Warwick, R. I.) led
off the scoring in the 32nd minute with her 22nd goal of the
season. Tomaselli shot from the right side from 15 yards and
drilled the ball into the lower right corner of the Lion net.
Emerson answered 13 second later as senior Lisa Viccione
(Meridian, Conn.) took a cross from junior
Meghan Foehl (Cheshire, Conn.) on the left and
shot from the six to the center of the net. Viccione next
took a cross from the right from senior Lindsay D'Andrea
(Medford, N.J.) and drilled a low liner to the middle of
the net to give the Lions the lead.
The 2-1 Emerson lead stood up through halftime although the Lions
dominated the first half statistics, taking 12 shots to only two
for Newbury. Emerson also held a 3-1 halftime edge in corner
kicks.
Sophomore Jennifer Stafford (Lake George, N.Y.)
started the Lions second half scoring surge with an unassisted goal
off her own rebound in the 58th minute. Viccione finished off
her hat trick just over three minutes later as she broke away down
the middle and shot to the lower right corner of the Nighthawk
cage.
Foehl put the finishing touches on the night for Newbury netminder
junior Rachel Wyszynski (Wilbraham, Mass.)
as she took a cross from Viccione, who had gathered in a perfect
lead pass form D'Andrea and deposited the ball in the middle of the
Nighthawk net.
Wyszynski was replaced by sophomore Jennifer Anderson
(Palmer, Mass.) who immediately made a diving save
on a blast from Foehl.
Sophomore Kara Pantano (Rockland, Mass.) scored
her first goal of the season in the 87th minute as she scored off a
corner kick from freshman Casey Jablonski (Orchard
Park, N.Y.). Senior Courtney
Stefancyk (Uxbridge, Mass.) finished the
scoring with her first marker of the year on a bullet from 30 yards
to the high center of the net.
Emerson's offensive onslaught in the second half was highlighted
by 25 shots taken in the stanza. The Lions again had a 3-1
advantage in corner kicks.
Wyszynski made five saves for the Nighthawks in 68 minutes.
Anderson added two. Emerson keepers freshman
Marissa MacDonald (Winchester, Mass) made one save
in the first half of action, and freshman Jill Dean (Lynn,
Mass.) picked up five in the second half.
Emerson celebrated Senior Night before the game and honored
D'Andrea, Viccione, Stefancyk, Anna Toner (New Vineyard,
Maine) and Tamara Kearney (Everett,
Mass.).
The loss drops Newbury to 6-8-2 on the season while Emersion
improves to 7-10. The Nighthawks return to the pitch on Saturday
October 30th when they host Lesley University on Senior
