Nighthawks Fall To Blazers, 4-0
The Newbury College women’s soccer team fell to Elms College, 4-0, in the second game of the men’s and women’s soccer doubleheader, Saturday afternoon. Junior Erica Griffo (Syracuse, NY/Solvay) recorded a goal and two assists in the Blazers first conference game of the season and second victory overall.
Elms junior Amanda Alvarado (Springfield, MA/Sabis International) put the Blazers on the board early with an unassisted goal off a rebound 25 minutes into the contest. They would add to their lead 10 minutes later when Griffo found junior Jennifer Killion (Cambridge, MA/Mount Saint Joseph) six yards out to take the 2-0 lead at the break.
The Blazers added to the lead in the second when Griffo connected with freshman Allyson Witaszek (Feeding Hills, MA/Agawam) to increase their lead to three in the 68th minute. With under two minutes left to play in the contest, Griffo scored the fourth and final goal on a breakaway pass from freshman Hayley Zisk (Baldwinville, MA/Narragansett Regional).
Despite the loss, freshman goalkeeper Kimberly Bibby (Brockton, MA/Brockton) recorded eight saves for the Nighthawks.
With the loss, Newbury falls to 0-1 in the conference and 1-4 overall while Elms improves to 2-5 and 1-0 in the NECC. The Nighthawks return to the pitch tomorrow, Sunday September 26th against the Rivier College Raiders at 1:00pm in Nashua, NH. Their next home contest is Tuesday October 5th when they host the Wheelock Wildcats at 4:00pm.
