Women's Soccer Names Captains for 2011 Season
Newbury College Head Women's Soccer Coach Bobby Desilets has announced his team's tri-captains for the 2011 season. Senior midfielder Jess Graus (Rochester, N.Y.) and senior goalkeeper Rachel Wyszynski (Wilbraham, Mass.) will be joined by returning junior forward Ashleigh Guy (North Smithfield, R.I.) as the leaders of the 2011 Nighthawks.
"We are lucky to have so many leaders on our team, these are three of many on our team," said Coach Desilets, "all three of these exceptional women add something different in a leadership role."
Graus returns for her third season as captain of the Nighthawks, looking to push the program towards being an NECC championship contender.
“Jess has been instrumental in building this program, and her commitment will ensure we have a very successful season during her senior year.”
The Nighthawks will have something they lacked in the past, a reliable goalkeeper, from Wyszynski. Having spent the last three seasons on the field, playing both midfield and defense, Wyszynski will return to her preferred position in goal.
"Rachel is a player that every coach dreams of having on their team," Desilets said. "She can play every position on the field and excel at all of them, she gives us great flexibility."
Ashleigh Guy returned to the Newbury this spring, having spent the fall 2010 season at the University of Rhode Island. Guy has already had a big impact since her return to the pitch during the Nighthawks non-traditional spring season.
“Ashleigh coming back to the Nighthawks gives the team a huge lift, as she can both score and create [scoring] opportunities for the team” said Coach Desilets. “Ashleigh is a very vocal player who will help get the best out of every player on the field.”
"I am confident that Graus, Wyszynski and Guy will lead by example, and push the program to new heights in 2011."
