Wyszynski, Nighthawks Soar Past Hawks
The Newbury College women’s soccer team recorded their first win against Becker College with the 5-2 victory, Saturday afternoon. With the win the Nighthawks improve to 2-1 in the conference and 4-5-1 overall while the Hawks drop to 2-1 in the NECC and 4-8 overall.
Junior Rachel Wyszynski (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional) put the Nighthawks on the scoreboard early. On a pass in front of the net from freshman Krista Toney (Broken Arrow, OK/Union), Wyszynski dribbled five yards left to beat her defender for the first goal of the game. Fellow junior Jessica Graus (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) also assisted on the goal.
Newbury scored four times in the first half. Toney recorded her second and third assists on the game finding freshman Briana Tomaselli (Warwick, RI/Pilgrim) twice to put the Nighthawks up by three. Graus concluded the half, finding the back of the net on a penalty kick in the 30th minute.
The Hawks made adjustments in the second and quickly scored two unanswered goals. Sophomore Caroline Plunkett (Rockaway, NY/St. Francis Prep) scored on an unassisted goal three minutes into the period. In the 68th minute sophomore Justine LeBlanc (Thompson, CT/Tourtellotte) cut the Nighthawk in half but Wyszynski added an assist to her first period goal, finding Tomaselli in the 70th minute of the contest.
Newbury returns to the pitch on Wednesday October 13th when they play a non-conference game at Suffolk University at 4:00pm. Their next home match will be October 17th against Mitchell College at 2:00pm.
