NEWBURY RACES BY BAY PATH, 7-0
LONGMEADOW, MA, Oct. 2, 2010 – Newbury College freshman forward Brianna Tomaselli (Warwick, RI) netted three first-half goals and the Nighthawks scored six times in the opening 45 minutes en route to a 7-0 shutout win over Bay Path College in Saturday afternoon’s New England Collegiate Conference women’s soccer match at Ryan Field.
With the win, Newbury snapped a five-game winless skid (0-4-1) to improve to 2-5-1 overall, 1-1 NECC. Bay Path, meanwhile, lost its third straight and fell to 1-8, 0-2 NECC.
Senior midfielder Ashley Greene-Allen (Brockton, MA) opened the scoring with a breakaway goal – her second of the year - when she collected a pass from junior defender Jessica Graus (Rochester, NY), split a pair of defenders and deposited a shot past Bay Path junior goalkeeper Janise Shabazz (New Castle, DE) at the 18:22 mark.
Tomaselli took over from there, as she registered her team-leading 5th, 6th and 7th goals of the year over the next 7:14 to complete the natural hat-trick and extend the Nighthawks’ advantage to 4-0.
Graus, who finished the game with three assists, tallied her first goal of the year in the 41st minute and freshman forward Krista Toney (Broken Arrow, OK) added her second goal of the season in the 43rd minute to give Newbury a 6-0 lead at intermission.
Sophomore defender Nicole Garafalo (Winstead, CT) completed the scoring with her first goal of the year in the 69th minute.
Freshman Kimberly Bibby (Brockton, MA) and sophomore Jasmine James (Wellesley, MA) combined for six saves in goal for the Nighthawks, who outshot the host Wildcats 18-14.
Shabazz finished with five saves for Bay Path in the loss.
