Engineers Overpower Nighthawks, 5-1
The Newbury College women's soccer team lost to WPI Saturday afternoon, 5-1. WPI junior Kristen Garza (Kingston, MA) was solid in the Engineers victory scoring two goals while assisting on two others.
Garza put WPI on the board early, 10 minutes into the match, when she found the back of the net on a pass from senior Liz Schreiber (Ashfield, MA). Eight minutes later Garza found senior Stacey Rudolph (Somers,CT) for the Engineers second goal of the game.
WPI opened the second half the same way they did the first half. On a pass from freshman Lindsey Grasis (East Brookfield, MA) Garza scored her second goal of the game. The Engineers fourth goal of the contest was the reverse of their second as Garza found an open Grasis to give WPI the 4-0 lead. Sophomore Hailey Taylor (Colusa, CA) scored WPI's fifth and final goal from fellow sophomore Victoria Howland (Red Hook, NY).
Junior Ashley Greene-Allen (Brockton, MA/Brockton) scored the Nighthawks lone goal on a break-away late in the game from Jessica Graus (Rochester, NY). With the loss, Newbury falls to 1-1-2 on the season while WPI improves to 3-4. The Nighthawks will return to action next Saturday September 26 when they travel to Southern Vermont to face the Mountaineers.
