And The Awards Just Keep on Coming
For the first time in her collegiate career, Newbury College women's basketball junior center Catherine O'Connell (Quincy, Mass.) was tabbed as the ECAC Player of the Week, which was announced late Tuesday afternoon. The ECAC's weekly honors come in addition to being selected the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Player of the Week and named to the New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWVA) Honor Roll on Monday.
O'Connell is the second Newbury student-athlete to earn the esteemed regional honors. Women's soccer sophomore Briana Tomaselli (Warwick, R.I.) garnered the accolades the last week in October following back-to-back hat-tricks against Anna Maria College (10/24/11) and Bay Path College (10/28/11).
The South Shore native currently finds herself atop the national leaders in rebounds and double-doubles. O'Connell trails only Hendrix's Jamie Tate by a tenth of a rebound averaging 14.5 points per game and sits tied for second with 11 double-doubles on the season – one behind the leader.
It is the second time in her three year career at Newbury O'Connell has nearly swept the weekly awards. As a freshman, she earned swept the NECC Rookie and Player of Week in addition to being selected as the NEWBA Rookie of the Week and D3Hoops Team of the Week.
