Alone In First

The Newbury College women's basketball team has won five of their last six games and sit alone at the top of the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) standings with their 60-45 victory over Wheelock College, Thursday evening. Junior center Catherine O'Connell (Quincy, Mass.) paved the way to the Nighthawks win registering eighth straight double-double of the season with 14 points and 14 rebounds.

Sophomore guard Jessica Ramsey (Milford, Mass.) knocked down two treys within the first four minutes of the contest as the Wildcats built up an eight point lead within the first six minutes of the contest. But the Nighthawks were resilient and spurned an 18-1 run sparked by sophomore forward Katie Haney's (Winchendon, Mass.) rebound at 14:27, leading directly to a Shayla White (Dorchester, Mass.) lay-up six seconds later. They kept the heat on the Wildcats and took a 32-20 lead into the locker room at the half as it appeared momentum was shifting.

The Nighthawks energy carried them well into the second half as they continued to pressure the Wildcats on both ends of the court. Coming off a weekend where she ripped down 18 rebounds against Cedar Crest College and the University of Dallas in Florida, Haney was force to be reckoned with under the boards snatching 12 rebounds out of the air. The Winchendon, Mass. native came within one point shy of a registering her second career double-double, tallying nine points on the evening.

Midway through the second half, Ramsey closed the deficit to five with a lay-up off a Kendra Bannister (Washington, D.C.) turnover but the Nighthawks were broke the game wide open with a 12-2 run. First year guard Nephie Marsh (Brockton, Mass.) capped off the run knocking down a long, wide-open trey to push the lead back to 15 and essentially seal the deal for the Nighthawks.

With the win Newbury return to .500 on the season at 5-5 and 3-0 in conference action while Wheelock falls to 0-9 and 0-2 in the NECC. The Nighthawks return to the hard-court on Tuesday January 10th when they travel to Longmeadow, Mass. to tip-off against Bay Path College at 8:00 p.m. Still in search of that elusive first victory of the season, the Wildcats will also be in action on January 10th when they host NECC opponent Mitchell College at 7:00 p.m.

Game Notes:
