Newbury Women's Basketball Announces Incoming Recruiting Class
The Newbury College women’s basketball team is continuing to build upon the success they experienced in 2011-12. Head Coach Katie Greene, who will be entering her sixth year, released the names of seven student-athletes who have committed to Newbury for the 2012-13 academic year.

O'Connell Selected to All-Conference First Team
Newbury College women’s basketball junior center Catherine O’Connell (Quincy, Mass.) was named to the All-New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) First Team. The South Shore native dominated the glass, averaging 14.6 points and, a conference-leading, 15.9 rebounds per game against NECC opponents to lead the Nighthawks to 13-5 conference record.

Nighthawks Fall to Blazers in Semifinals, 78-65
The Newbury College women’s basketball team’s post-season run came to an abrupt end Friday night falling to second seeded Elms College, 78-65, in the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Semifinals. Senior guard Kendra Bannister and first year guard Nephie Marsh led the Nighthawks with a team-high 14 points a piece in the loss.

The third seeded Newbury College Nighthawks defeated the sixth seeded Mitchell College Mariners, 89-59, in the first round of the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Championship Tournament, Tuesday evening. The dynamic defensive duo of junior center Catherine O’Connell (Quincy, Mass.) and sophomore forward Katie Haney (Winchendon, Mass.) paved the road to the NECC Semifinals for the Nighthawks.

The Newbury College women’s basketball team closed out the regular season with a decisive, 76-36, victory over Southern Vermont College, Saturday afternoon. Senior guard Kendra Bannister (Washington, D.C.) led four Nighthawks in double figures registering her third double-double of the season, netting 14 points while ripping down 11 boards en route to the victory.

The Newbury College women’s basketball team eliminated an early 14-point deficit to pick up their first victory over Daniel Webster College with the 60-59 victory Tuesday evening. The nation’s leading rebounder, junior center Catherine O’Connell (Quincy, Mass.) was a force in the post as she tied her career game-high, dropping 25 points on the Eagles in addition to ripping down 23 boards.

Reigning NECC Player of the Week, junior center Catherine O’Connell (Quincy, Mass.) was the team's leading scorer netting 22 points while ripping down 13 boards and tallying seven blocks.

The Newbury College women’s basketball team pushed their win streak to three games with a convincing, 65-45 victory over Wheelock College to sweep the season series. First year guard Nephie Marsh (Brockton, Mass.) came off the bench and led three Nighthawks in double figures, dropping a game-high 18 points on the Wildcats en route to the victory.

For the second time this season and third time in her career, junior center Catherine O’Connell (Quincy, Mass.) has been selected to the D3Hoops Team of the Week. The South Shore native earned the honors for a second time this season after having a monstrous week averaging 15.5 points per game and 19.0 rebounds per game to help guide Newbury to a 2-0 week.

The Newbury College women’s basketball team did something that they have never done in program history Saturday afternoon: defeat Elms College and snap their seven game win streak in the process. Junior center Catherine O’Connell (Quincy, Mass.) had a monster day notching a team-high 18 points while ripping down 20 boards in the victory in the Nighthawks’ 77-63 victory over the Blazers.

The Newbury College women’s basketball team snapped a two game losing streak, Thursday evening, defeating Mitchell College, 79-59, in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action. In the process, junior center Catherine O’Connell (Quincy, Mass.) recorded her 1,000th rebound of her collegiate career less than a minute into the second half as she finished with her 13th double-double of the season, tallying 13 points and 18 boards.

Senior guard Shayla White (Dorchester, Mass.) surpassed a career game-high, dropping a game-high 21 points on the Southern Vermont College Mountaineers, Saturday afternoon. However, it was not enough for the Nighthawks to pull out their eighth New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) victory of the year as they fell to the Mountaineers, 72-63.

The Newbury College women’s basketball team defeated Bay Path College, 79-58, in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action on a snowy Saturday afternoon. For the second straight game, senior guard Shayla White (Dorchester, Mass.) was the game’s leading scorer, paving the way to victory dropping a game-high 19 points on the Wildcats.

The Newbury College women’s basketball team stopped a two game skid and righted the ship with a 63-26 victory over nearby rival Lesley University, Thursday evening. Senior guard Shayla White (Dorchester, Mass.) and freshman guard Nephie Marsh (Brockton, Mass.) each knocked down 15 points a piece as the Nighthawks swept the season series against the Lynx.

Junior center Catherine O’Connell (Quincy, Mass./North Quincy) dropped a new single game-high, 25 points on Elms College to help the Newbury College women’s basketball team outscore the Blazers, 33-29 in the second half. But the Nighthawks second half comeback attempt fell short as Elms handed Newbury their first New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) loss of the season with the 69-61 victory.

The Newbury College women’s basketball team completed the season sweep over Becker College with a 76-44 victory Thursday evening. For the first time in her collegiate career sophomore forward Katie Haney (Winchendon, Mass.) registered back-to-back double-doubles, tallying 16 points while ripping down 16 rebounds en route to the Nighthawks fifth victory of the season.

And they showed no signs of stopping pulling out the comeback, 73-65, victory on the road against the Wildcats. Sophomore Katie Haney registered her second collegiate career double-double, setting a career game-high 20 points with 14 rebounds.

Senior guard Shayla White (Dorchester, Mass.) earned All-Tournament Team honors at the Key Largo Classic in Key Largo, Fla. over New Year’s Eve. Registering 22 points with eight rebounds and six assists she helped the Newbury College women’s basketball to 1-1 weekend. Classmate Morganna Machado (Attleboro, Mass.) was lights out from beyond the arc in the first game, registering a game-high 20 points against the University of Dallas.

NighthawksTip-Off NECC Basketball Season with First
The Newbury College men’s and women’s basketball teams opened up New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action with a historic first. While the men were taming 5’8” Lesley guard John Sanchez in a 67-58 victory at home, their female counterparts were battling the Lynx just up the road, earning their first win in six years over Lesley with a lopsided, 52-26 win. It was the first time in Newbury history both programs defeated rival Lesley University on the same night.

Returning with four seniors and the New England Collegiate Conference’s (NECC) leading rebounder last year, the Newbury College women’s basketball team was selected to finish fourth in Coaches Pre-Season Poll with 61 points. Released this afternoon by NECC Commissioner, Del Malloy, the Nighthawks are in a three-way tie for fourth with Lesley University and Elms College.

Chen Selected as NECC Nomination for NCAA Woman of the Year
Recent 2011 Newbury College graduate, Amy Chen (Chelmsford, Mass.), was recognized as the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC)’s honoree for this year’s NCAA Woman of the Year Award. The award honors outstanding female student-athletes who have shown great leadership and have excelled in all three phases of college life: academics, athletics and the college community.
