Nighthawks Fall to Rams, 85-53
The Newbury College women’s basketball team was defeated
by non-conference opponent Suffolk University Rams, 85-53, Monday
evening. Sophomore forward Jalisa Fields (Bronx,
N.Y./St. Michael Academy) led the Nighthawks’
offense netting 13 points while ripping down 12 rebounds, earning
her 2nd double-double of the season. Sophomore center
Catherine O’Connell (Quincy, Mass./North
Quincy) registered her 11th double-double of the season,
scoring 12 points and 12 rebounds.
The Rams opened the first half scoring thirteen unanswered
points. Shayla White (Dorchester,
Mass./Wellesley) opened the scoring for Newbury with a lay
up with 13:06 remaining in the half. A three-point play by
O’Connell minutes later pulled the Nighthawks with nine,
16-7. Suffolk responded scoring the next eleven points and
the Rams never looked back. The Rams went to the locker room
at the half with 19 points lead, 44-25.
Three Suffolk players scored in double figures led by sophomore
guard Catherine Carey (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial) who was 4
of 6 from beyond the three-point line. Mary Garon (Auburn,
N.H./Trinity) scored 13 points and Megham Black (Roslindale,
Mass./Archbishop Williams) added 12 in the victory.
With the loss, the Nighthawks fall to 8-11 while the Suffolk Rams
improve to 12-6. Newbury returns to the hard-court on
Thursday, February 3rd when they travel to New London, Conn. to tip
off against third place Mitchell College Mariners (10-6/7-2 NECC)
at 7:30pm.
