Monteiro Notches 10 Treys in Victory Over Mountaineers
BENNINGTON, Vt. – Senior guard Ashley Monteiro (Cambridge, Mass./Cambridge Rindge & Latin) was lights out from beyond the arc in Newbury’s regular season finale, 87-82 victory over Southern Vermont College, Saturday afternoon.
Monteiro set two new career game-highs in points and three-point field goals, draining 10-of-19 from long distance for a game-high of 30 points. Her previous high was 23 points last year, January 23rd against Daniel Webster and knocked down seven treys against Bay Path on February 5, 2009.
Along with junior guard Morganna Machado’s (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro) 11 points, Monteiro drained six of her 10 in the first half to lead the Nighthawks to the 43-38 advantage at halftime.
The Mountaineers mounted a comeback in the second but they could not contain the Nighthawks, who shot 41.2% from the field. Machado followed up notching 20 while junior guard Shayla White (Dorchester, Mass./Wellesley) added 14. Classmate junior guard Kendra Bannister (Washington, D.C./Brooke Point) rounded out the foursome in double digits tallying 10 on the afternoon.
Despite the loss, Alyssa Davis had an incredible night for the Mountaineers leading the team with 24 points, going an impressive 5-8 from behind the arc. Kiara Bates, Joa Claircius and Abby Riedel scored 16, 15 and 13 points for SVC.
The victory helped the Nighthawks seal home court for the first New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) quarterfinals. They finish the regular season with a 9-7 NECC record and 11-14 overall. Newbury will host the Hawks of Becker College Tuesday evening in the NECC Quarterfinals at 6:00pm in Brookline.
