Machado Leads Four in Double Digits En Route to Victory
The Newbury College women’s basketball team completed the double-header sweep of Southern Vermont, defeating the Mountaineers, 82-51, in game two. Junior guard Morganna Machado (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro) led three of five starters in double figures, registering a team-high 18 points.
Sophomore forward Jasmine Bishop (Waterville, Maine/Waterville Senior) sparked an 8-0 run to begin the game before Southern Vermont was forced to call a time-out at 17:21. Coming out of the time-out, Newbury went up 10-0 before Mountaineer freshman Kourtney Hewitt (Bennington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) knocked down a jumper from junior Rita Hall (Temple Hill, Md./Potomac).
Machado was red-hot from the field, draining a halftime-high score of 13 points while Bishop was a force in the low-post ripping down five rebounds as the Nighthawks to a 40-20 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, the Mountaineers tried valiantly to chip away at the deficit. Junior guard Joa Claircius (Clermont, Fla./East Ridge) netted 17 of her game-high 25 points in the half but the Nighthawk lead proved to be insurmountable for the Mountaineers.
Newbury took advantage of second chance opportunities, outscoring Southern Vermont, 26-5 and led the Mountaineers, 6-2 in fast-break points.
Late in the contest, junior guard Shayla White (Dorchester, Mass./Wellesley) picked the pocket of Mountaineer freshman Dayna Carpenter (Northampton, Mass./Northampton) and took it down court for the fast-break lay-up, to increase the lead to 32. White led Newbury netting all eight of her points in the second half.
Sophomore center Catherine’ O’Connell (Quincy, Mass./North Quincy) finished with 16 points while junior guard Kendra Bannister (Washington, D.C./Brooke Point) led the Nighthawk bench registering 10 points. The bench outscored the Mountaineers bench, 24-13.
Newbury improves to 8-10 and 6-4 in the NECC while Southern Vermont falls to 5-12 and 3-7 in the conference. The Nighthawks return to the hard-court on Monday January 31st when they host non-conference Suffolk University at 7:00pm.
