O'Connell, Machado Garner NECC Accolades

Sophomore center Catherine O’Connell (Quincy, Mass./North Quincy) and junior guard Morganna Machado (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro) garnered New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) post-season honors. O’Connell was named to the NECC All-Conference second team for her second consecutive season while Machado earned NECC Honorable Mention. The two upperclassmen helped lead the Newbury College women’s basketball team to their first home NECC post-season game and third tournament appearance with a 9-7 NECC record and 11-15 overall.

O’Connell, who averaged a double-double on the season, led the Nighthawks with 297 points and finished the year third in the nation in rebounds, averaging 15.1 per game. The second year center also registered her 100^th career block mid-way through the season and surpassed her previous season-high in blocks recording 61 in 2010-2011.

Machado became the second player in Newbury history to be named to the D3Hoops Team of the week after setting a new career game-high, notching 26 points against Becker College on December 11, 2010. Later in the year, she drained a buzzer beating trey to upset Mitchell College on February 12^th. Throughout the course of the season, she netted 10-plus points 10 times including draining 20 against Southern Vermont College in the final game of the regular season.
