Nighthawks Pick Up Win Over Fighting Scots
WENHAM, MA. – The Newbury College women’s basketball
team went on an 11-4 run over the final three minutes of regulation
to edge out Gordon College, 46-43, and pick up their first victory
of the season Thursday evening. Sophomore Catherine
O’Connell (Quincy, Mass./North Quincy) had a huge
game registering 16 points while ripping down 23 boards to lead the
Nighthawk offensive attack.
Freshman forward Lauren Kranyak had drilled consecutive 3-pointers
to stake Gordon to their late lead. Kranyak finished with 12
points and 12 rebounds, for her third double-double of the
season. However, Kranyak fouled out with 2:35
remaining. Newbury forward Jalisa Fields (Bronx,
N.Y./St. Michael) scored six consecutive points on two
free throws and two buckets in the paint to put Newbury back out in
front.
Fields followed up O’Connell tallying 11 points while junior
Shayla White (Dorchester, Mass./Wellesley) also
scored in double figures recording 10. Gordon was led by Kranyak's
12, while Sara Schwanke and Adams both had 11 points.
With the win, Newbury improves to 1-5 on the season while Gordon drops to 1-5. The Nighthawks return to the court this weekend when they travel to Weston, Mass. to face Regis College, tip-off’s at 1:00pm.
