Nighthawks Halted By Eagles
Nashua, N.H. – The Newbury College women’s basketball team fellow to first place Daniel Webster College, 73-41, Tuesday evening. Junior Vanessa Bosques (N. Windham, Conn.) notched a game high 15 points adding nine rebounds while fellow junior Alycia Gervais (Windham, Conn.) added 12 points and eight boards.
Sarah Paternostro (Glastonbury, Conn.) added 10 points and four assists and senior Alyssa Regan (Salem, N.H.) pulled down a game high 11 rebounds adding eight points and three steals as the Eagles improved to 22-2 overall (15-0 NECC) with one regular season conference game remaining.
Senior Tonisha Tate (Lynn, Mass.) chipped in with nine points and six caroms, while Kacie Lang (Raymond, N.H.) scored seven points, adding a game high four steals.
Ashley Monteiro (Cambridge, Mass.) led the Nighthawks (10-14, 8-7 NECC) with 11 points and three assists while Shayla White (Dorchester, Mass.) notched nine points and six boards.
Catherine O’Connell (Quincy, Mass.) enjoyed a monster night under the glass for the Nighthawks. The Quincy native set a new career game-high registering eight blocks, including notching her 100th career block in her second year at Newbury. Kendra Bannister (Washington, D.C.) added eight points.
The Eagles never trailed after taking a 7-6 lead on two free throws from Tate at the 3:46 mark and broke open a 14-13 game with a 14-1 run keyed by two layups each from Gervais and Kirsten Murphy (Woodstock, Vt.) and grew the lead to as many as 17 before taking a 38-23 lead to the break.
Newbury shaved the lead to 11 (40-29 on a Monteiro trey 1:16
into the second, but back to back layups from Gervais and Tae
rebuilt the lead to 15 with 17:14 left.
Holding a 15-point edge (54-39) with 11:21 to go, DWC put it away
with 13-0 run over a 3:27 stretch including threes from Lang and
Bosques and the hosts held Newbury scoreless over the final seven
minutes.
The loss drops Newbury to 10-14 on the season and 8-7 in the NECC while Daniel Webster remains undefeated in NECC action improving to 15-0 and 22-2 overall. The Nighthawks return to the hard-court in the regular season finale on Saturday February 19th when they travel to Bennington, Vt. to tip off against the Mountaineers at 3:00pm.
