Nighthawks Fall To NECC Leaders
The Newbury College women’s basketball team fell to the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) leading Eagles of Daniel Webster College, 70-53, Tuesday evening. Sophomore Catherine O’Connell (Quincy, Mass./North Quincy) registered her 10th double-double of the season, netting 12 points while ripping down 12 rebounds.
For the majority of opening half, the Nighthawks kept the Eagles leading scorer junior guard Vanessa Bosques (North Windham, Conn./Windham) in check but they had no answer for classmate Alyssa Regan (Salem, N.H./Salem). After knocking down the game’s opening bucket, the Daniel Webster junior completed the half with 10 points.
Junior guard Morganna Machado (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro) helped the Nighthawks keep pace with the Eagles early on in the contest. Draining all nine of her points from beyond the arc, she cut the Daniel Webster lead to a one-possession game with a long trey seven minutes into the game. But it was not enough as the Eagles kept the pressure on.
Bosques, who needed just three points to reach the 1,000-point milestone in her career, recorded the elusive feat late in the first half. The Connecticut native knocked down back-to-back field goals with under seven minutes before the break to give the Eagles their biggest lead of the half, 32-18.
Newbury made a mini run, 6-0 run, sparked by an Ashley Monteiro (Cambridge, Mass./Cambridge Rindge & Latin) long range three with 1:22 left as Daniel Webster took the 41-33 lead into the locker room.
When the teams returned to the court in the second the Nighthawks tried valiantly to make a late comeback. Down by 17 junior guard Shayla White (Dorchester, Mass./Wellesley) sparked an 8-2 run, picking the pockets of the Eagles and taking it back down court for the fast-break lay-up. Not too long after sophomore forward Jalisa Fields (Bronx, N.Y./St. Michael Academy) forced another Eagle mistake and found White for second fast-break lay-up three minutes later to cut the deficit to one. White finished the game tied with O’Connell for a team-high 12 points,
With the loss, Newbury falls to 5-4 in the NECC and 7-10 overall while Daniel Webster remains undefeated at 8-0 and 15-2 overall. The Nighthawks return to the hard-court on Saturday January 29th when they host Southern Vermont College (3-11; 1-6 NECC) at 2:00pm.
