Assistant Women's Basketball Coach Sarah Briggs Joins the Boston Police Department
Newbury College’s assistant women’s basketball coach Sarah Briggs became the latest member of “Boston’s Finest” when she graduated from the Boston Police Academy on May 16th 2011 and joined ranks in the oldest Police Department in the Country. The origins of the Boston Police Department can be traced back to 1631 with the formation of the first night watch.
Briggs, a Taunton native and assistant women’s basketball coach for the past four years, has helped guide the Nighthawks to back to back playoffs appearances all while working to achieve her dream of becoming a member of the Boston Police Department. Briggs plans to balance both police and coaching, as she will remain a member of the coaching staff for the upcoming 2011-2012 season. Prior to achieving this dream, Briggs was a standout three sport athlete at Mount Ida College in 2001, she went on to earn a BA in Women’s Studies and Sociology from the University of Massachusetts - Dartmouth 2005, her Masters in Women in Politics and Public Policy from the University of Massachusetts – Boston 2007 and most recently a Masters in Business Administration from Simmons College 2010. Briggs, an accomplished scholar also won the Boston Police Academy Fitness Award while breaking the record for the most pull-ups by a woman (13) held since 1991. This award gave her the opportunity to choose her first Station Assignment. Officer Briggs is currently assigned to District A-1, Boston’s North End and Financial Districts.
