Newbury Women’s Basketball Announces Incoming Recruiting Class
The Newbury College women’s basketball team has announced a strong recruiting class for the upcoming 2011-2012 school year. Head Coach Katie Greene released the names of two student-athletes who have committed to attend Newbury and compete for the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) championship in 2011-2012.
Here are the two early commitments the Nighthawks have received:
Nephie Marsh – Guard (Brockton HS/Brockton, MA)
Nephie is an extremely talented player who will make an immediate impact for the Nighthawks at the guard position. Her explosive first step to the basket and her solid shooting makes her tough to guard against and her quickness and fast footwork makes her a solid defender on the perimeter. Over the course of her high school career, Nephie earned countless awards including 2007-2008, 2010-2011 team MVP, 2008-2009, 2009-2010 Lady Boxer Award, 2010-2011 Big 3 All-Star Award, 2010-2011 All-Scholastics and team captain of the Bay State Gators AAU team. Outside of her playing career, Nephie is an active member of the TV production club and also volunteers as a coach and referee for the Trinity Catholic Academy Basketball League. “I decided on attending Newbury College for various reasons. The location of the campus was perfect for me. When I went to the athletic open house as well as an overnight stay, the team made me feel as if I was already family. They were extremely friendly and made me feel at home. I love the small class sizes as well as the professors, they really take the time to embrace each student’s needs”, said Nephie when referring to her choice of schools. Nephie will enter this fall with the class of 2015 and plans to study criminal justice.
Kyla Fletcher – Shooting Guard (Park East HS/Harlem, NY)
Kyla is a very talented shooter and will add great depth to the Nighthawks roster at the shooting guard. Her fundamentally sound jump shot and her ability to shoot from behind the arc makes her a nightmare for opponents to defend, while her ability to distribute the ball creates opportunity for teammates. Kyla was awarded the “coaches award” in the 2009-2010 season at Park East HS. Kyla’s high school head coach Chris Pace (Park East) said “her strengths are her basketball knowledge and IQ, she picks up the game very well and should transition well to the next level. She led our team in scoring this season. She can shoot the outside jump shot very well and hit from beyond the arc. She does all the little things that separate her from others on the court.” Kyla will enter the class of 2015 this fall at Newbury with plans on majoring in Sports Management.
